Ulcinj is situated on the very south of the Adriatic coast and on the southeast of Montenegro. It abounds in the greatest number of sunny days on the Adriatic. There are 25000 inhabitants in Ulcinj. The 20 km of beaches, among which 15 km of fine sandy beaches, the olive groves, the curing sand, mud and mineral sulphur water make Ulcinj to be some kind of a pearl. Ulcinj is primarily visited due to the sun, the sea and the sandy beaches, however, if you are already here or you have already planned to come here, then there are surely many other things too that you should see, do or experience. The beauty of the Ulcinj castle, whose walls arise from the sea, is unique. The Old town, with its Cyclops walls, towers, gates, loop-holes, tells us its own history. There on the Slave Square even the famous writer Cervantes was once captured. The Old town of Ulcinj was the last residence in exile for one of the biggest rebels of his time, Sabetha Tsevi (1626-1676), the reformer of Talmud (the Jewish holy book).
In the vicinity of Ulcinj there is Lake Shas, which has got a unique beauty and which is so clear and calm and abounds in fish. With the area of 364 ha and the surrounding landscape it is a unique habitat for various birds, and as such famous all over Europe. On the shore of Lake Shas there are the ruins of “the dead town” Svac, known to have had as many churches as there are days in a year. It is not enough just to see Ulcinj, you should experience Ulcinj, and when you are leaving, do not shake off the sand totally, let it symbolize a new encounter. |
